We, PBCI-CFP Tribe, are praying and seeking for justice and peace among the poor even in the midst of the CoViD19 crisis. While at work, we’ve assigned workplaces for each team member in our center and we’ve encouraged everyone to stay there unless it’s really necessary to crossover. All our field operations and travel plans are suspended indefinitely. This is our small way to help #FlattenTheCurve.

Our Ama, Lakan Sumulong, led the Inclusive Development Team of PeaceBuilders Community, Inc. (PBCI) and Coffee for Peace (CFP) to celebrate with the Indigenous Peoples and the Bangsamoro in affirming their kinship at the Talaandig Ancestral Territory at the foot of Mt. Kitanglad. The Settlers have been actively participating in this celebration for the past 9 years.

08-17 January 2020. Three Indigenous Communities in Mindanao welcomed the visit of 12 Canadians from Southern Ontario. This is part of PBCI-CFP Inclusive Development Team’s initiative to facilitate the connection between the coffee farming communities and prospective impact investors and market representatives. This relationship-building and social entrepreneurial partnership is based on justice, peace, and reconciliation.

Since October 2017, I have been in communication with the Corporate Social Responsibility Department of the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) and the Obo Manono Tribal Council for a joint inclusive development project among the Indigenous Peoples in this side of Mt. Apo. Last 06 January 2019, we met together to assess the situation of the farmers after the series of earthquakes. The 10 families unanimously expressed their determination to pursue with coffee ‘farmerpreneurship.’

It has been our joy to bond with our farming partners among the Bagobo Tagabawa Indigenous People in the Province of Davao del Sur who are affected by earthquakes. We delivered 3 water filter sets in Purok Balutakay, Barangay Managa, Bansalan last 21 December. Last 27 December, we delivered 5 sets of water filters in Barangay Almendras, Municipality of Padada. Then last 28 December, we distributed relief packs to 127 families in Purok Malipayon, Barangay Bansalan and another 65 packs to affected families in Barangay Binaton, Digos City.

Mary, a strong revolutionary woman, gave birth to Jesus, a Palestinian Jewish boy. His birth was graced with the presence of Arab wisemen. His family was a trans-continental refugee escaping a cowardly tyrant who massacred children. He grew up and established a community that incarnates Love and Peace. Energized by the Spirit of the Creator, this community replicated itself around the world through the centuries.

Abu Dhabi, 09-11 December 2019 — H.E. Dr. Mohammad Al Kaabi (Chairman of the Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, UAE), and H.E. Abdallah bin Mahfudh ibn Bayyah (President of the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies) honored Al Haj Ahod ‘Murad’ Ebrahim (Chief Minister of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) and Bishop Efraim Tendero (Secretary General of the World Evangelical Alliance) for their inter-faith peacebuilding contributions in southern Philippines. The awards were presented before the 500+ political, religious, and civil society leaders from 80 countries during the 6th Assembly of the Forum for Promoting Peace, The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

04-06 December 2019. Our ‘Ama,’ Lakan Sumulong was invited to speak at the 8th Ecumenical Church Leaders Summit of the Philippine Ecumenical Peace Platform (PEPP). He shared the experiences of PBCI-CFP Inclusive Development Team on how to discern, recognize, and amplify the inherent powers of the people. The theme of the 2019 PEPP Summit was “Being a Church for Transformative Peace in this Very Challenging Times.” It was held at the YC James Yen Center, International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, Silang, Cavite.
