As a Filipino peacebuilder shaped by the legacies of colonialism and resistance in our own land, I feel a deep kinship with the struggle of the Palestinian people. I write this especially to my fellow Filipino Christians — both Catholic and Protestant — who may have embraced Zionist interpretations of Scripture without fully considering their historical, ethical, and theological implications. The narrative that modern Israel represents the direct fulfillment of biblical prophecy has often been used to justify the displacement, oppression, and even annihilation of Palestinians. Yet emerging historical and genetic research reveals a truth that challenges this ideology: Palestinians themselves are the closest living descendants of the ancient Israelites (Finkelstein & Silberman, 2002; Atzmon et al., 2010).

In my work with PBCI, I have been learning about the Bangsamoro and their fight for self-determination and control over their ancestral domain. I’ve had the privilege of gaining insight into various aspects of this struggle. I have seen the impact of armed resistance, which has played a crucial role in establishing a degree of self-determination within their ancestral domain through the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The Bangsamoro’s journey to this point has fostered a deep sympathy for others with similar causes, most notably the Palestinians, whom many Bangsamoro ardently support. This support and connection to parallel struggles have deepened my understanding of the Bangsamoro’s plight and the broader fight for self-determination and control over ancestral lands.

Christian Zionism is a war-mongering theology which was originally taught to early Filipino converts by fundamentalist American missionaries who, wittingly or unwittingly, were supportive of the colonial interests of their imperialist country, the United States of America. This ideology, wrapped in war-oriented American geopolitics, is still perpetuated among many fundamentalist and conservative evangelical churches in the Philippines. I pray that Filipinos would be healed from this blindness and see what Israel really is — an illegal occupation force in Palestine, oppressing the Palestinians for the past 75 years.
